
Scott Kiser
BIO
Scott is a native of Swannanoa, North Carolina. He started his musical studies with his father, Steve. Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, emphasizing in trumpet performance, from Brevard (NC) College. In the summers, Scott attended the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, where he worked with Fred Mills, Marie Speziale, Josef Burgstaller, Harvey Philips, and Ronald Barron, among others.
After Brevard, Scott studied privately with Dr. P. Bradley Ulrich before attending The Florida State University. Scott earned a Master of Music degree from FSU, where he studied trumpet with Bryan Goff. While at FSU, Scott performed with the Florida State University faculty brass quintet, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and taught trumpet lessons and chamber music as a graduate teaching assistant.
After graduating from FSU, Scott attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied trumpet with Ray Sasaki and chamber music with Charles Villarrubia, and was a graduate teaching assistant in trumpet. While in Austin, Scott performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the Austin City Brass. Scott also performed with the UT Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Jerry Junkin, including the World Premier performance of John Corigliano’s Circus Maximus and the New York premier of Donald Grantham’s Baron Cimetiere’s Mambo.
After completing his coursework at UT, Scott moved to Washington, DC, to pursue a freelance career. While in DC, Scott performed with the Annandale Brass Ensemble, Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra, Capitol City Symphony, Fredericksburg Symphony, and Alias Groove.
While living in DC, Scott auditioned for, and was admitted into, the Navy music program, and eventually was stationed with Navy Band New Orleans. While at Navy Band New Orleans, Scott performed with the Ceremonial Band, Crescent City Brass Quintet, Brass Ensemble, and Full Steam Brass Band. Scott performed for many elected officials, including Senators Mary Landrieu and Jeff Sessions, U.S. Representatives Cedric Richmond, Ahn “Joseph”Cao, and Richard Shelby, Governor Bobby Jindal, and New Orleans Mayors C. Ray Nagin and Mitch Landrieu, and New Orleans City Council. While in the Navy, Scott completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Texas.
Scott is currently pursuing a teaching certification at Loyola University in New Orleans. He maintains an active performance schedule, including performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, New Orleans Classic Brass, and solo performances on the Trinity Artist Series, as well as numerous weddings and church services.
Scott has received numerous awards, including a scholarship to the International Trumpet Guild conference in Manchester, England, in 2002. Scott was also a semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition in from 2000 to 2004, and was a member of the University of Texas Trumpet Ensemble, which won third place at the 2005 National Trumpet Competition.
Scott has shared the stage with many notable musicians, including Joshua Bell, Andre Watts, Charlie Daniels, and the Black Dyke Mills Band. Scott has worked closely with composers Eric Ewazen, John Corigliano, Frank Tichelli, Donald Grantham, and David Holsinger, and has performed under the batons of Harry Begian, James Croft, Mattias Baimert, Jerry Junkin, Gunther Shuller, and Col. John Bourgeois.
